Celebrating Global Children

Background

Why train staff working with Asylum Seeker Children?

In 2001 The Early Years National Training Organisation began a project 'Childcare in a Changing World'.

A gap was identified in the occupational standards framework and learning programmes, there was a feeling that there was no consideration of this specialist community. A few groups devised support materials to address the more specialised skills needs of childcare workers faced with the challenge of caring for children (0-16) from refugee, traveller and asylum seekers communities. However, there is still a great deal of work to be done.

In order to provide high quality care for these children within the mainstream provision, the workers must have the appropriate skills. The standards that can deliver these have not yet been developed. 'Childcare in a Changing World' recognised that these issues are increasingly important for childcare professionals across Europe, as the number of displaced people and travellers increases month by month in most countries. This project continues to move forward in developing these standards and raising the standards of care provided for children in their changing world.
