Celebrating Global Children

Course Details

The programme is made up of twelve, 6-hour sessions.

"In safe hands" – Intro Session

  • Clarification of who is a Refugee? Who is an Asylum Seeker?
  • Develop an understanding of the entitlement of refugee children
  • Share experiences and fears of working with asylum seekers
  • Discussion of personal hopes and beliefs
  • Recognition of diversity, cultural tradition, faith, social and community patterns

Emotional Well-being / Positive Environment

  • Revisit Early Years child development and health issues, but raising awareness of particular needs of our global children
  • Presentation of United Nations Rights of the Child, debate and realisation of how this should become adopted practice
  • Discussion of children’s emotional development
  • Practical suggestions on implementing experiences to encourage emotional well-being
  • Promoting self reliance and self worth

Citizenship

  • Brief synopsis of relevant theorists
  • Good citizenship workshop
  • Reflective experience of provision of positive environment within group establishments
  • Montessori back to basics practical experiences and examination of the need for a child to have their own space
  • Stressing the importance of a planned, organised and stimulating environment

Physical Play

  • Physical development and movement "Readiness for Life"
  • Promotes movement as a key to learning
  • Highlights the crucial relationship between the brain and the body in relation to how young children learn
  • Gross and fine motor development – practical activity ideas to encourage health and well-being
  • Emergence of imagination and the sociable child, through physical awareness

Equal Opportunities

  • Explore the impact of media on societies attitudes and values
  • Clarification of key terms with field of childcare
  • Examine anti discriminatory practice
  • Introduction to anti-bias curriculum
  • Develop an equal opportunities policy

Drama and Role Play

  • Erasing fears of Drama in a relaxed teaching environment working alongside an experienced drama lecturer
  • In depth emotional study lead through repetitive mime
  • Group work highlighting the possible journeys made by people seeking asylum
  • Explore the feelings of separation and loss
  • Sessions closes by combining the day’s performance

Cultural Identity

  • Reflective practice on working with Asylum Seekers and their families over the past ten years
  • Shared information and working examples of available resources relevant to work with Asylum children
  • Presentation of a vast collection of children’s multi lingual books
  • Highlighting the importance of supporting dual language families

Encouraging Positive Behaviour

  • Promoting a positive approach to children’s behaviour
  • Developing evaluation skills through the information gained observing children’s role play
  • Identifying good practice in encouraging self expression through positive behaviour

The Importance of Language

  • Comprehensive study of expressive language, non–verbal communication and body language
  • Strategies for overcoming dual language speaking
  • Ideas for using symbols and visual clues in communication

Creative Music Making

  • Present clear and simple ideas and techniques for creative music-making with the global child
  • Utilise a ‘hands on’ approach to training, enabling staff to experience music as a practical subject in which everyone can participate
  • Inspire creative thinking and, most importantly, confidence in staff so that they can deliver exciting and appropriate music sessions with the children
  • Discover that music is universal and requires no language, enabling the global child to participate fully

Early Play Opportunities

What do we know about how very young children learn? Linking child development and how children’s brain develop to their needs in nursery and home :

  • How a well-rounded framework of learning for young children has to include a positive outlook on physical care and care routines
  • Planning for learning opportunities. What is unique about helping babies, toddlers and young children as they learn?
  • The main issues in making warm relationships with young children and their parents, including the key person system
  • A chance to reflect on the strengths and opportunities for improvement in your own practice within the sector
