Standards The SVQ in Children’s Care learning and Development Level 2 incorporates the national occupational standards and qualification structure identified by Skills for Care and Development and is accredited by the SQA as a Scottish Vocational Qualification.
Structure of the SVQ The way the SVQ is made up is shown below. The Unit title appears in bold and the elements that make up each Unit are listed under the Unit title.
To achieve the SVQ level 2, candidates must complete the SIX Mandatory Units, and ONE Optional Unit.

Mandatory Units Candidates must complete all SIX Units:
CCLD 201 Contribute to positive relationships
- Interact with and respond to children
- Interact with and respond to adults
- Communicate with children
- Communicate with adults
CCLD 202 Help to keep children safe
- Prepare and maintain a safe and healthy environment
- Follow procedures for accidents, emergencies and illness
- Support the safeguarding of children from abuse
- Encourage children’s positive behaviour
CCLD 203 Support children’s development
- Contribute to supporting children’s physical development and skills
- Contribute to supporting children’s emotional and social development
- Contribute to supporting children’s communication and intellectual development
- Contribute to planning for children’s development needs
CCLD 204 Use support to develop own practice in children’s care, learning and development
- Make use of support systems to develop your practice
- Use new knowledge and skills to improve your practice
CCLD205 Prepare and maintain environments to meet children’s needs
- Prepare and maintain the physical environment
- Prepare and maintain a stimulating environment
- Maintain an environment that builds children’s confidence
- Support routines for children
CCLD 206 Support children’s play and learning
- Participate in activities to encourage communication and language
- Provide opportunities for children’s drama and imaginative play
- Encourage children to be creative
- Support physical play and exercise
- Encourage children to explore and investigate

Optional Units Candidates must complete all ONE Unit:
- Contribute to the effectiveness of teams
- Support the development of babies and children under 3 years
- Support a child with disabilities or special educational needs
- Support children and young people’s play
