Narrowing the Vocabulary Gap
Saturday 21st April 2018
9.00am – 4pm
Our wondrous world of words..
It is time to weave a new narrative.
… startling statistics
…reality, theory and practice
…a child’s curiosity
…children’s whispers, wishes and wonder
What a Wonderous World of Words.
We have two fantastic keynote speakers;
What neuroscience tells us about early language development.
Neuroscience affords us cutting-edge insights into the brain and how language is acquired from birth. The evidence also demonstrates that children’s learning trajectories concerning language are influenced by their experiences well before the start of school. What does this mean for you? In this keynote, Mine will explore some of the key ingredients necessary for healthy language and communication development – and why these need to be in place sooner rather than later.
We also have three lively and energetic workshops running on the day;
River of Rhyme with Marie Richardson; An exploration of Rhyme, Poetry and Stories using the dialogic approach. New songs, stories and rhymes blended with traditional well known versions. Exploration of PEER sequence and CROWD prompts.
Tree of Talk with Moyra Boland; The art of storytelling and Role Play. Using helicopter stories, the mosaic approach and hot seating to create tantalising talk.
Volcano of Vocabulary with Alice Sharp; Provocations and Invitations to Play. A varied selection of resources and artefacts to support contingent talk. Exploration of dynamic strategies to consider interaction, interruption or interpretation of learning. Discussion around the thinking of Dr Bruce Perry.
Our friends from TTS and Community Playthings will be providing playscapes for you to explore on the day and each delegate will receive a goody bag.
