Every early year’s setting should look to creating an environment that fosters children’s mathematical thinking, working, collaborating and independence.
A child’s numeracy experience is enriched by their peers, the adults and the rich environment around them. A numeracy rich environment emphasises the importance of using materials and interactions which facilitate numeracy and mathematical opportunities. These opportunities should be relevant, interesting and challenging. Children learn as they explore, interact and have meaningful discussion about maths.
We should share the joy of mathematics by modelling behaviours of mathematicians. Think aloud about mathematics as you wonder “why?”, question “what if?”, and ask “why not always?”. Children will then ask those same questions as they explore the math all around them!
• Discuss the importance of giving numeracy a high status.
