Children who have an awareness of print understand that the squiggly lines on a page represent spoken language. They also understand that print has different functions depending on the context in which it appears.

There are many techniques of engaging children in learning to read. When most adults share a book with a child they read and the child listens. In dialogic reading the adult helps the child become the teller of the story.

Delegates will explore various engagement strategies but focus on the Dialogic approach. They will be introduced to, practice and develop the PEER sequence. This is a short interaction between adult and child.

When we are playing with our children we should engage them in a fascinating and literacy rich environment. Our children should develop the skills to look, listen, pay attention and to hear and understand
